Maybank Global CR Day - Cahaya Kasih Initiative

Oct 9, 2023

In conjunction with Maybank Group’s Global Corporate Responsibility (GCR) Day on 19th August, Maybankers from across the Group banded together to get personally involved in community engagements. Maybank GCR Day is organized annually where all Maybankers come together to spend time and energy on the causes that matter most, showcasing efforts from our year-long Cahaya Kasih Programme. Guided by our mission of Humanising Financial Services, we focused on creating positive and sustainable impact on the lives of our beneficiaries, leaving no one behind in our journey to build brighter futures.

The beneficiary of Maybank Ventures’ GCR initiative, was the United Hope Education Center, a school that was established to provide free education to marginalised and disadvantaged children. Every child is entitled to basic rights like education, that others might take for granted, and to make these rights available to them. Our aim was to create a safe, clean and organised school to continue their education.

The Maybank Ventures team was split up into multiple groups that helped deep clean the classrooms, pantry as well as the common areas of the school. This included mopping and sweeping the floors, as well as cleaning the tables, chairs and walls of the school. We also helped to sort out old books that were damaged or no longer used to be sent to a recycling center.

Jonathan Tan, Head of Maybank Ventures, commented: “It was eye-opening to learn of the struggles that these children had encountered during their lives which made the mission and purpose of the United Hope Center so more meaningful. It was just 1 Saturday for us but it felt good to be able to have a slight impact to the lives of these 100 children”.

“I’m very thankful to the Maybank Ventures team who came and transformed our humble center into a beautiful house of learning. It’s incredible how hard and quickly they worked to get everything in perfect condition for the start of school on Monday”, Jennifer Friis, United Hope Education Center founder said.
